Braille Elevator Signs FAQ
Yes. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and ICC A117.1 require tactile and braille signage at elevator entrances on every floor. This includes jamb-mounted floor designation plates (with the star symbol identifying the main level of egress), star-of-life or emergency identification where applicable, and raised-character/braille labels on car control buttons. Non-compliance can result in failed inspections, fines, and accessibility lawsuits.
Most buildings need four categories of signage: (1) jamb braille plates installed on both sides of the elevator door frame on every floor at 60″ to centerline, (2) braille button labels or braille elevator buttons identifying each floor and control function inside the car, (3) in-case-of-fire signs posted near the call station on every floor, and (4) floor identification signs inside elevator lobbies. Braille Sign Pros carries all four.
Braille elevator buttons (and button labels) go inside the elevator car next to the control panel, identifying floor numbers and functions like Open Door, Close Door, Alarm, and Emergency Stop. Jamb braille plates are the 2″ × 2″ (or larger) signs mounted on the elevator door frame at each floor that tell riders which level they've arrived at, the ground floor is marked with a raised star symbol.
Yes. ADA guidelines require jamb plates to display characters at least 2 inches high, mounted 60 inches above the finished floor to the centerline of the sign, on both sides of the elevator door frame. Our jamb plates are manufactured to these specifications by default.
The raised star identifies the main floor of egress, the level firefighters and emergency responders use as their staging point. It must appear to the left of the floor designation on the jamb plate at that level.
Absolutely. Choose from multiple background and character colors to coordinate with your lobby or cab interior, as long as the sign maintains the 70% light-reflective contrast between characters and background that the ADA requires. We'll guide you through compliant color pairings when you order.
Most of our elevator signs ship with high-bond adhesive backing for direct application to clean, flat surfaces. Jamb plates, buttons, and lobby signs all install in minutes without special tools. See our ADA Sign Installation guide for step-by-step instructions.
Standard elevator signs are made to order in the U.S.A. and typically ship within a few business days. Orders over $125 ship free. For large facility rollouts or rush timelines, call 888-297-8577 and we'll build a production schedule around your project.
